Junior skeptics task force
Twice as many teens as adults have a blog. More than half of online teens have created profiles on sites like MySpace, which in 2007 was the third most popular website in the USA and the sixth most popular in the world. In the USA more than 85% of university students have an entry on Facebook with reams of photos and status reports on their lives updated to the minute. (Jonathan Zittrain, The Future of the Internat, Penguin 2008.)

The result? Instead of turning out work for a single teacher to read, teens are putting their skills into work that everyone can read. But the fog of information generated by this free-for-all is no way to have teens tell facts from lies. So in Western Australia the WA Skeptics are sponsoring a task force of junior skeptics. The task force would:

1. Monitor critical thinking in popular online teen areas such as Twitter.
2. Try to ensure that the availability of skepticism is not forgotten.
3. Keep WA Skeptics informed.

The aim is not to crusade, evangelise, or promote particular ideas. It is simply to alert young people to the benefits of critical thinking and being undeceived. And who better to do this than young people themselves?

All students at high school are eligible. WA Skeptics provide support and resources.
Meet the challenge! Call Dr John Happs on (08) 9448 8458 if you are interested.
