Perth Skeptics at their second meeting, August 2009, picture from their website. 12 people attended. Skeptics in the Pub are popular with skeptics who like to eat and drink while thinking about weird things. Regular pub meetings are held in the UK (London and many other places), New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington), and Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Hamilton Vic, Hobart, and Sydney) -- and now Perth. Perth Skeptics is a group of skeptics, atheists, agnostics, and free thinkers. They enjoy meeting to talk, eat, drink, and be skeptical about things like alt med, psychics, alien life, conspiracy theories, homeopathy, ear candling, chiropractic, creationism, and paranormal and pseudoscientific claims in general. Perth Skeptics is independent of WA Skeptics and is more like a secret society (see last paragraph below), possibly because of its evident links with atheism.
Perth Skeptics is organised by Kylie Sturgess, former English teacher and winner of the 2007 Australian Skeptics Prize for Critical Thinking for her involvement in the Philosophy in Schools project, and for using WA Skeptics Awards for Young Critical Thinkers to promote critical thinking in her English classes. For more information visit http://www.meetup.com/Perth-Skeptics/. But the site loads slowly, lacks detail, and is out of date. The latest details are available only to members with passwords. You can apply for membership via an on-screen form, and if accepted you will receive a password allowing access to the details. But be warned -- Meetup has many groups, and it is possible to find yourself directed to a group other than the one you wanted.
